Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign

quick-read informational card on the importance of screening

Overview

In the Fall of 2003, I took a course called Medical Communications through Carnegie Mellon's Department of English. Over the course of the semester, we studied how medical and health care information is constructed and transferred between experts, health care providers, educators, researchers, patient support groups and patients. Patients are usually not medical experts, but often need a thorough understanding of health information to make important decisions regarding treatment.

Process
Over the course of the semester, I researched, planned, and designed a communication product for a specific medical condition or disease. My work on the project included:

  • developing a full project proposal;
  • researching topic in medical journals and popular media;
  • writing all content;
  • conducting formative and evaluative user research; and
  • crafting and formally presenting the final product.

Solution
I developed a series of four quick-read informational cards, as well as a pamphlet-sized booklet providing more in-depth information. The cards and booklet were developed as a system, using plain language and "straight talk" to generate interest in the topic, increase its perceived relevance, and provide key information in a clear and useful manner.
