Overview
Jackie Jonas, a professional story teller, came to
our Graduate Typography class and told us the story of Delia,
a woman from her hometown who wandered the streets and whose
wild antics kept the children guessing about her past. The
story recounts how and why Delia came to be the person she
was, and reveals the storyteller's unspoken connection to
the main character.
It was our charge to take the story
as Jackie told us, and translate the spoken word to the written.
We were to use any typography to create effects on our audience,
just as Jackie used her voice, intonation, and silence.
Process
I was particularly interested in the fact that the story was
revealing the path of Delia's life, what she encountered that
made her withdraw from society. I also liked the idea that
there were two stories at play: one was the action occurring
externally, and the second was the change taking place in
Delia.
Solution
I used the story we were given as stepping stones along the
path, and represented my take on Delia's side of the story
in a streaming path that intersects the stepping stones. I
wrote and designed the text of Delia's story so that it reads
directly across the main story. Making this concept work required
hours of careful revision, and continuous modification to
the flow of the path.
